D&#233gustation Delights

Last night we treated ourselves to the dégustation menu at Restaurant Amusé in East Perth to celebrate B’s not-quite-fortieth birthday. I say treat because at  a per person price of $120 for the meal, $65 for matching wines, a special truffle addition for $25, and an extra cheese course this was not a meal we could spring for every week.

I can also say that the food and service was worth every cent.

All of the good things I’d heard about this restaurant were true.  We were greeted graciously, asked about any special food requirements or allergies and then floated through 12 fantastic courses.

Our head scarfed waitress spoke with such knowledge and enthusiasm about both wine and food I felt transported to the terraced vineyards of Austria, the winery above Lake Como, and the farms skirting Lyon. All of the introductions to food and wine were timed so that the flow of conversation at the table wound around it without feeling interrupted at any point.

The food was suitably warming and suited to the wintry weather outside, while still being light and tasty, allowing us to leave at the end of the evening well satisfied and very full, but without being bloated.

Standout dishes for us were;

  • Mushroom tea with gruyere cheese toastie
  • Pear and chestnut polenta with Manjimup black truffle
  • Snapper with rye crumble and sago
  • Chocolate honeycomb with salt caramel

OK, so the lighting didn’t really impress the boys, but given all the wine glasses the table needed to accommodate there really wasn’t room for any table lighting. I would have dearly loved a menu to take home as a memento, one I could stick up on my notice board beside the last few from Jackson’s.

Will we be heading back?  Absolutely.
